SUMMARY:Legislative Roundtable Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Legislative Roundtable provides a setting for dialogue to take place on public policy issues and gives public agency staff\, elected officials\, their staff and businesses an opportunity to network. The meeting has a guest speaker on a public sector topic and regular updates from our local cities\, agencies and elected officials.\n\n\n\nStaff members provide brief reports from their prospective agencies to inform each other and members of the chamber of upcoming events or other items of interest.\n\n\n\nThis Month's Speaker: Division Chief John Spykerman - Ventura County Fire Department\n\nJohn Spykerman oversees Ventura County Fire Department Division 2\, which is made up of two battalions comprising a total of 16 stations in Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley. His duties in the East County include responding to large-scale incidents\, overseeing facilities and managing resources. The Moorpark resident also represents the department at City Council meetings and other public events.\n\n\n\nSpykerman is a lifelong Ventura County resident who grew up in Port Hueneme and earned a degree in fire technology from Oxnard College and a bachelor's degree in vocational studies from Cal State Long Beach. He joined a county hand crew in 1988 and got hired as a firefighter the following year.\n\n\n\nOver the past few decades he's worked from Ojai to Simi Valley\, including the farther-flung reaches of VCFD's coverage area with the wildland firefighting unit. He said his experience has given him an apprecation for the variety his native county has to offer.\n\n\n\nWhen he's not at work\, the father of three and grandfather of four likes to hike\, scuba dive and ride motorcycles.
