Los Robles Hospital to Host Event Instructing the Community on How to Stop Traumatic Bleeding

Thousand Oaks, CA March 6, 2017 – Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center along with Ventura County Emergency Medical Services Agency and Ventura County Fire Department will be hosting a free community event on National Stop the Bleed Day, held on March 31, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in Classroom 1. This community event is designed to teach the principles of bleeding control and providing first aid until the arrival of emergency responders. As part of the Stop the Bleed initiative, similar events will be hosted nationwide.

Motivated by the 2012 tragedy in Sandy Hook and multiple tragedies that have occurred in the ensuing years, what has become known as the Hartford Consensus was convened to bring together leaders from law enforcement, the federal government, and the medical community to improve survivability from manmade or natural mass casualty events. The resulting injuries from these events generally present with severe bleeding which, if left unattended, can result in death. The participants of the Hartford Consensus concluded that by providing first responders (law enforcement) and civilian bystanders the skills and basic tools to stop uncontrolled bleeding in an emergency situation, lives would be saved.

“Providing bystander support in emergency situations has been an enduring mission of Los Robles’, said Natalie Mussi, President and CEO. “We have educated many community members on the importance of bystander, compression-only CPR and this is just another way we can prepare people to save lives.”

The American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma is leading the effort to save lives by teaching the civilian population to provide vital initial response to stop uncontrolled bleeding in emergency situations. This will be accomplished by the development of a comprehensive and sustainable bleeding control education and information program targeted to civilians that will inform, educate and empower the 300+million citizens of the United States.

If you are interested in attending this free community event or for more information, please contact Cynthia Marin, Trauma Manager at Los Robles Hospital, at 805-370-4695 or Cynthia.Marin@hcahealthcare.com.
