Simi Valley Family YMCA and Adventist Health Simi Valley are launching a free yearlong diabetes prevention program. Sign-ups are underway. The program kicks off September 26. Only 15 people will be accepted into the program.

The program is for adults 18 years or older, who have a body mass index (BMI) of over 25, a risk for or have been diagnosed with prediabetes or who have had a previous diagnosis of gestational diabetes. Individuals with either type 1 or 2 diabetes do not qualify.

The group-based program consists of weekly meetings with a lifestyle and fitness coach during the first six months and monthly sessions during the last six months. Participants will learn how to eat healthy, find the right physical activities for them and deal with stress. Participants will also receive a free one-year YMCA membership while in the program (includes unlimited facility use, childcare while working out and free family events and special programs).

"The program is designed to give individuals who are borderline type 2 diabetics the tools to help combat the disease," says Mitch McManus, Simi Y membership and marketing director. "Two of the major goals of the program are to lose 7 percent of body weight and gradually increase physical activity by 150 minutes per week."

Diabetes affects more than 29 million people in the U.S. The Simi YMCA is one of more than 200 Ys across the country offering the diabetes prevention program.
