What is a Certificate of Origin?

Certificates of Origin are international trade documents used to determine the origin of goods for official, commercial and financial purposes. Importing countries consider the origin of goods in order to assess appropriate duties and if the goods may be legally imported.

Additionally, Certificates of Origin may be requested by banks for clearance of letters of credit, freight forwarders or customs administrators. Generally, a chamber of commerce is the primary authorized entity to stamp these documents. Electronic Certificates of Origin (CO), created online, are the digital versions of these documents.

Why is an electronic Certificate of Origin better for my business?

Traveling or sending couriers to the Chamber to get your COs stamped can be time consuming and costly. eCertify provides exporters and freight forwarders with a streamlined, time-saving and user-friendly way to authenticate your COs. Benefits include:

    ·        Improve turnaround time to better meet tight deadlines

    ·        Eliminate paper-based processing

    ·        Reduce administration  and courier costs

    ·        Receive up-to-the-minute information on the status of your submission

    ·        Proofs of the certificate can be shared with other parties to ensure accuracy and avoid hold ups in customs

Eliminate your paper-based processing of Certificates and start saving time and money today!

How quickly can I get my Certificate of Origin stamped and back to me?

During normal business hours (Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. PST) we can have it back to you within 24-48 hours. On weekends and holidays, please allow extra time for us to process these orders and call during business hours to follow-up on your orders.

If you anticipate having a tight deadline, or you need one right away, just give us a call at 805.370.0035 and we will do our best to get it back to you immediately.

    How much does it cost?

The standard fee is $75 per document for Chamber members, $250 for non-members.

Additional documents, such as Bills of Lading, Commerical Invoices, etc. will be stamped at no additional charge when submitted with a Certificate of Origin.

How do I get my documents stamped?

    1. Login to eCertify here.

    2. Decide if you will upload your documents (called eCertSubmit), or create them on the eCertify site (called webdocs).  Go to the “My Details” section (gray box, left hand side) and select either eCertSubmit or Webdocs. Click Save. You can change your method as needed.

    ·        How to submit using webdocs.  This is if you want to enter your shipment details into the system and have the system automatically create the documents for you. This is a great time saver if you haven’t already created the documents

    ·        How to submit using eCertSubmit.  This is if you want to upload already created PDF files. If you need a template, you can download one here, and access a how-to guide here.

    3. Once your documents are created or uploaded, click “Submit.”  Your documents will be reviewed and stamped by the Chamber.  You will receive a confirmation email after the documents have been stamped.

    4. Follow the link in the confirmation email, login to eCertify and review your documents.  If everything looks correct, click “Accept.” The system will take you to a payment screen.

    5. Pay for your certificate through Paypal.  You now own the file, and can print or email the eCO file as many times as needed.
