The Southeast Ventura County YMCA is taking signups for its Adventure Guides program for the 2023-24 school year. A kick-off BBQ and movie night will take place at the Yarrow Family YMCA branch in Westlake Village (
31105 Thousand Oaks Blvd.) on Saturday, August 26 at 6:30 p.m.
Adventure Guides is for parents and their children (ages 5-11). It is designed to enhance the quality of family time and support and strengthen the communication between parent and child at an early age.
Adventure Guides is set up into parent-daughter and parent-son groups called Circles. Parent-child pairs join a Circle with families in their neighborhood or the school they attend. They usually meet once a month for games, crafts, stories and other activities. Also planned this year are ice skating, a Pinewood Derby, camping at Emerald Day on Catalina Island and taking part in a community service project.
Y-Adventure Guides is for children in kindergarten through second grade. Y-Trailblazers are for children in third grade and up. Instilled in all activities are core values found in YMCA programs: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
“Adventure Guides is a way for parents and their children to connect,” says Tori Cusack, Youth and Family Program Director at the Y. "It’s a ‘device-free’ time where life-long memories will be created.”
